Youths in Edo State on Tuesday staged a peaceful rally at the Government House in Benin City in a show of solidarity with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s firm stance against cultism and related violence across the state.
Addressing the demonstrators, Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating cult-related activities, declaring that no amount of intimidation or threats would deter the ongoing crackdown.
“If my life had not been protected as a youth, I would not have become the governor of Edo State today,” Okpebholo stated. “We must save our land. Cultism must stop in Edo State. Every Edo blood matters, and no matter the intimidation, the fight against cultism is total.”
The governor warned that insecurity poses a serious threat to the state’s economic growth, noting that safety and peace are prerequisites for attracting investment.
“Edo must be safe for all. Otherwise, investors will be reluctant to come in. Cult killings must stop. We must drive out those threatening the peace of our communities,” he said.
Okpebholo also addressed concerns regarding the recent demolition of a building allegedly linked to cult activity, insisting that the government followed due process in taking action.
“This is not an arbitrary fight,” he said. “We are not targeting innocent citizens. We are targeting criminals. This administration, and the people of Edo, are not afraid. Together, we will end this menace.”
The governor thanked the youths for their support, describing cultists as enemies of progress who seek to destroy the state’s future. He vowed that their threats would not derail the government’s efforts.
