The Ebonyi State Government has announced a new minimum wage of N90,000 for civil servants, up from the previous N70,000.
The decision was disclosed on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the weekly State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting in Abakaliki.
Omebe said the increment, which takes immediate effect, applies to all categories of state workers and reflects Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
“This is not a political statement. This government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” he said.
The commissioner also noted that the state government had cleared all pension and gratuity arrears of retirees from the state’s creation in 1996 to date. He added that the verification process for retirees in local government areas was ongoing, after which payments would commence.
He stressed that if the government could shoulder such financial obligations, it would not hesitate to add N20,000 more to workers’ wages in line with its “people’s charter of needs” policy.
Omebe further revealed that the EXCO approved the implementation of the eight-year tenure policy for directors, including the immediate retirement of permanent secretaries and directors who had served the maximum period on the same cadre.
He described Governor Nwifuru as “a leader and builder of human capacity and infrastructure,” assuring that the administration would continue to prioritize the needs of the people.
