Bloemfontein, September 9, 2025 — Nigerians living in South Africa have mobilised in large numbers to cheer the Super Eagles as they face the Bafana Bafana in a decisive FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein today.
Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, President-General of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), confirmed the mobilisation in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday.
“We are eager for victory and for Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup. Nigerians here have been fully mobilised to come out and support the Super Eagles in today’s match,” Onyekwelu said.
He explained that in recent weeks, NICASA worked closely with the Nigerian Consulate in South Africa to sensitise the Nigerian community on the importance of backing the national team.
Ensuring Peaceful Support
Onyekwelu acknowledged the intense rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa on the football pitch but stressed that the association had been promoting tolerance and unity among fans.
“We know it always feels like a power tussle whenever Nigeria and South Africa meet, but we believe this will not raise unnecessary dust. We have been preaching the power of Mbotu—the African spirit of openness and unity,” he said.
According to him, NICASA has also been in talks with South African law enforcement agencies to guarantee security and a peaceful environment before, during, and after the match.
“The union has sensitised Nigerians to live decently and avoid any form of provocation or confrontation around this crucial fixture,” he added.
Confidence in Super Eagles
Onyekwelu expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ chances, assuring that the players would feel the full backing of their compatriots in the stands.
“One thing is sure—the Super Eagles will hear, see, and feel our support. We shall ginger them to victory,” he said.
Group Standings
Nigeria goes into the match with 10 points, just one point behind second-placed Benin, after their 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Saturday. South Africa currently tops the group with 16 points from seven matches, following a 3-0 win against Lesotho.
