In response to the recent escape of an inmate, security measures have been significantly tightened at the Sapele Correctional Centre in Delta State. The escape occurred under mysterious circumstances over the weekend, coinciding with the appointment of Raymond Neagu as the new Controller of State Corrections.

The inmate, identified as Paul Michael, had been held on charges related to the murder of Kelly Onojaiyefe, a furniture apprentice from Oghara town in Ethiope West LGA. His disappearance from the facility has raised serious concerns about security measures previously thought to be stringent.

Mr. Ikechukwu Iloba, the command’s spokesman, publicly confirmed the incident in Asaba on Wednesday. He expressed the command’s bewilderment over the escape, noting the high level of security supposedly maintained at the facility.

“The controller is quite perturbed by the incident and has ordered a thorough investigation to uncover both the immediate and underlying reasons behind the escape,” Iloba stated. He also emphasized that the case would not be disregarded, and the Controller General of Zone G has mandated a full inquiry.

To manage the investigation, Controller Neagu has organized an investigative team, over which he will preside as per directives from the Controller General of Zone G. The team’s mandate includes identifying any lapses or complicity within the correctional facility’s operations, and to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Reassuring the public, Iloba mentioned that a specialized search team has been deployed to locate and recapture the fugitive. Additionally, the Controller has directed the squadron commander to enhance security at the center while the investigation is ongoing.

The sudden escape has prompted an overhaul of the security protocols at the Sapele Correctional Centre, as local authorities work to prevent future breaches and restore public confidence in the state’s correctional system.
