A dramatic twist unfolded late Friday night during Chef Hilda Baci’s bid to set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest pot of jollof rice when the massive custom-built pot unexpectedly collapsed during the weighing process.
The incident occurred after a full day of successful cooking at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, where thousands of supporters had gathered to witness the record-setting attempt. According to eyewitnesses, a crane was brought in to hoist the gigantic pot onto a scale for an official weight measurement — a critical requirement for Guinness certification.
However, as the crane began lifting, the steel vessel buckled under its own weight, collapsing suddenly and sending portions of rice spilling. The mishap sparked panic among spectators, with many screaming as the festive atmosphere turned chaotic.
Security personnel quickly intervened, halting the operation to prevent further damage or injuries. No casualties were reported.
A video clip of the collapse has since gone viral on social media, fueling speculation about whether the weighing was successfully completed. The uncertainty now casts doubt on the official submission to Guinness World Records, as the final measurement is essential for validation.
The development marks a tense setback in what had otherwise been a well-organised and widely celebrated event. Despite the collapse, supporters have continued to express solidarity with Baci, praising her resilience and innovation in showcasing Nigerian cuisine on the global stage.
Guinness World Records has yet to issue a formal statement on whether the attempt will stand despite the disruption.
