Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been crowned the Men’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year following an outstanding campaign for the Red Devils.

The Portuguese midfielder received the prestigious honour during the PFA Awards ceremony held on Tuesday at The Opera House on Quay Street, beating five other leading Premier League players to the individual prize.

Fernandes, 31, was shortlisted alongside Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, Declan Rice, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes and Rayan Cherki.

The award represents another major recognition for Fernandes, who has enjoyed one of the most impressive individual seasons of his Manchester United career.

The United captain has already collected the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and the Premier League Player of the Season prize.

He was also named the Premier League Playmaker of the Season after producing a record-breaking 21 assists during the campaign. His tally surpassed Thierry Henry’s previous record of 20 assists, set during the 2002/03 Premier League season.

In addition to his remarkable creativity, Fernandes contributed nine goals as Manchester United finished third in the Premier League. The position represented the club’s best league finish in three years.

His consistent performances also earned him the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the third consecutive season. He has equally been recognised by his teammates as Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year for the past two seasons.

Fernandes’ success was further underlined by his inclusion in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

The team featured David Raya, Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Nico O’Reilly, Declan Rice, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago alongside Fernandes.

Earlier in the evening, Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was unable to claim the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

That honour went to Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, who emerged ahead of Cherki, Bournemouth youngster Junior Kroupi, Arsenal teenager Max Dowman and Liverpool prospect Rio Ngumoha.

For Fernandes, however, the evening ended on a high as his performances throughout the season were recognised by his fellow professional footballers.

The award further strengthens his status as one of the leading midfielders in English football and highlights the influential role he continues to play as Manchester United captain.

With another major individual honour added to his collection, Fernandes will now look ahead to the new season hoping to build on his impressive performances and help Manchester United challenge for even greater honours.

At least two people have lost their lives following large-scale celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico’s national football team secured qualification for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Authorities in the Mexican capital confirmed that a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from suffocation after massive crowds gathered in the city’s streets to celebrate Mexico’s impressive 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

Officials said emergency responders were deployed to manage the situation as thousands of jubilant supporters flooded public spaces following the historic result. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while local media reports have also suggested a possible third fatality, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.

The victory is particularly significant for Mexico, ending a four-decade wait for a win in the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup and igniting widespread celebrations across the country.

Fans filled major roads and public squares, waving national flags, singing, and cheering as they marked one of the nation’s most memorable football achievements in recent history.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued nomination forms to 13 House of Representatives candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, clearing them to participate in the 2027 general elections.

The development marks a significant step in the electoral process as political parties continue to complete documentation and submit candidates within the timetable released by the electoral commission.

Despite the progress, the APC is yet to finalise its candidate for the Ido/Ibarapa Federal Constituency. The constituency remains the only outstanding federal seat where the party has not officially confirmed a flag bearer.

Sources within the party indicated that consultations are ongoing among key stakeholders to resolve issues surrounding the selection process before the deadline for candidate submissions.

The issuance of nomination forms is one of the statutory requirements expected of political parties before candidates can be formally recognised by INEC for the general elections.

With the documentation of 13 candidates completed, attention is now focused on the unresolved Ido/Ibarapa Federal Constituency, where the APC is expected to announce its candidate after concluding internal deliberations.

Political activities are expected to intensify across Oyo State in the coming months as parties strengthen preparations and mobilise support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Growing up in Ijebu-Ife, in the heart of Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, my world was one of flat farmlands, low plains, and thick vegetation. I never encountered a single hill or mountain, not in childhood curiosity nor in adolescent wanderings. Even when I moved to Lagos, where the land meets the Atlantic, I remained surrounded by coastal flats and lagoons, unaware of the rugged beauty hidden in other parts of our nation.

That changed when I ventured to Ondo State as a young student at the School of Agriculture, Akure (now Federal University of Technology, Akure). It was there that I first understood what it meant to climb a hill. Every morning, we ascended the slope to wait for one of our lecturers, Mr. Benbela, whose classes often began at the top. Those early treks were more than exercise, they were my first communion with elevated land, with nature rising above the ordinary.

My first visit to Abuja deepened this revelation. The capital city’s skyline is shaped not by skyscrapers but by rock formations that have stood for millennia. I made my way to Zuma Rock, standing like a silent sentinel at the gateway to the city, its giant face gazing over the plains of Suleja. Soon after came Aso Rock, the city’s granite heart, which I later photographed through all the seasons of the year, its contours shifting gently with the light and weather.

From that point, I was captivated. Hills and mountains were no longer mere landforms, they became stories etched into stone, timeless and patient witnesses of our nation’s journey.

In my travels, no region holds as much rugged beauty as Plateau State, a land of ancient granite outcrops, undulating ridges, and serene valleys. It is, without question, Nigeria’s most beautiful state.

The Shere Hills, rising east of Jos, are among the highest points on the Jos Plateau, reaching over 1,700 metres above sea level. Standing atop them, you feel suspended between earth and sky. The air is cool, thin, and pure, and as your eyes sweep across the horizon, you realise how dramatically the landscape shifts from state to state, a mosaic of natural splendour woven by time.

Further afield lies Assop Falls, cascading from the rocks of the Plateau, feeding life into the valleys below. Here, one witnesses how geology becomes art, where water, stone, and vegetation paint a picture of Nigeria’s heartland at its finest.

From Pulka in Borno State, where scattered rock formations dot the landscape, to the borderlands of Adamawa, the earth begins to rise again, blending with the Cameroonian Highlands we once studied in geography classes. I recall a climb in Adamawa that took nearly four hours, every step revealing a new vista, every turn offering proof of how nature rewards patience and endurance.

And then there is Taraba State, home to Nigeria’s highest point, Chappal Waddi, standing tall at 2,419 metres above sea level, on the Mambilla Plateau. The plateau itself is an otherworldly stretch of green meadows and rolling mist, where cattle graze in serenity and clouds drift at eye level. It is, without question, the most beautiful place in Nigeria.

Descending into the Southeast, the land transforms again, into the soft undulations of Enugu, whose name means “hill top” in Igbo. The Udi Hills dominate the landscape, their slopes rich with coal seams that once powered Nigeria’s early industrial years.

Whenever I travel through Enugu, I am reminded of the old Third World song “Lagos Jump”, the rhythm of the land rising and falling like music itself. The hills here are gentler, but no less soulful, carrying the stories of generations who built their homes upon their sides.

Back in the Southwest, the hills take on a subtler grace. Oyo State surprises many with its elevation, from the Bower’s Tower overlooking Ibadan, to the interior hills near Iseyin and Okeho, nature reveals her hidden contours.

But if one seeks true spectacle in the region, Ekiti State stands proudly second only to Plateau. Here, forests rest atop hills, waterfalls leap from ridges, and every road seems to wind through elevated beauty. The very name Ekiti derives from Okiti, meaning “hill” in the local dialect, a fitting name for a land of heights.

Then there is Ondo State, home to the world-renowned Idanre Hills. Rising nearly 1,000 metres above sea level, the Idanre Hills tell a story of civilisation, faith, and resilience. Climbing its ancient steps, one encounters shrines, caves, and the remnants of old settlements that whisper tales of centuries past. No one stands before Idanre without a sense of reverence, it is nature preserved in majesty.

Nasarawa State lies quietly beside the Federal Capital Territory, yet it too hides marvels, rugged hills and massive rock formations shaped by the ages. The Farin Ruwa Falls, among the highest waterfalls in Nigeria, descend dramatically from the plateau ridges. Each time I traverse this region, I am reminded that wherever there are hills, there are springs, fresh, pure water that emerges from the deep, as though the earth itself breathes.

In the South-South, Cross River State claims its place among the highlands. The ascent toward Obudu Ranch Resort is a journey of wonder, steep, winding roads that defy logic, cutting through mist-shrouded mountains. Standing atop Obudu, with clouds beneath your feet, you understand why this is one of the ten places every Nigerian should experience before leaving this world.

Through the decades, I have climbed rocks, crossed ridges, and stood at Nigeria’s highest peaks. In every hill and mountain, I see not just stone and soil but the resilience of our people. The landscape mirrors our strength, sometimes rough, sometimes serene, always enduring.

Our nation is not defined only by her cities or politics but by her geography, the quiet poetry of her land. And yet, too few Nigerians have seen this beauty firsthand. Until those entrusted with tourism and culture commit to intentionally showcasing these wonders, even we, her children, will not fully grasp the splendour of the country we call home.

Heavenly Father,

Bless this land called Nigeria, from her lowest valleys to her loftiest peaks.

May her hills and mountains stand as symbols of hope, strength, and unity.

Let her rivers flow with peace, and her skies open with grace.

Grant wisdom to those who lead, courage to those who build, and vision to those who tell her story.

Let every Nigerian come to see the beauty that lies within, in our land, our people, and our spirit.

May Nigeria rise in prosperity as her mountains rise in glory.

May she succeed in peace, progress, and purpose.

It was another beautiful morning. At exactly 5:10 a.m., I began my walk, the streets still wrapped in sleep and the air crisp with promise.

In my ears, the golden voice of Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey flowed like a familiar prayer. His timeless songs, “Africa Is My Home” and “No Place Be Like My Country” became my companions, each lyric a reminder of gratitude and belonging.

As I walked, I reflected on this great country called Nigeria, vast, diverse, and full of paradox. A land so often misunderstood, yet so rich in soul. Some Nigerians, perhaps too many, have made a habit of speaking ill of her, forgetting that love is not reserved for the flawless.

To me, Nigeria is like a marriage, one entered with laughter and hope, tested by time and trials, yet impossible to abandon. Even when we quarrel with her, others look on with admiration, wondering how we cannot see her beauty.

The rhythm of Chief Commander Obey’s music carried me deeper into reflection, every beat stirring old memories and dreams. And then, just as if heaven wanted to join the meditation, a heavy rain began around 6:23 a.m., sudden, unrelenting, and yet strangely comforting. It washed the streets clean, the sound of raindrops drumming in harmony with Obey’s melodies. I smiled to myself; how fitting, I thought. Rain, rhythm, and reflection, all the elements that make Nigeria what she is: raw, emotional, and endlessly beautiful.

My mind drifted to one of her greatest wonders. The Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State the most breathtaking place I have ever seen, and my number one among Nigeria’s ten most beautiful destinations to visit before you go to the great beyond.

I remember that journey as though it were yesterday. On my way to the Mambilla Plateau in Sardauna Local Government, I stopped briefly at the Gashaka Gumpti National Park. I had read so much about it, and I wanted to see its magic for myself. But as fate would have it, the park was fully booked that day. So, I drove on, and that detour became a blessing in disguise.

Glancing into my rear-view mirror as I climbed toward Gembu, I saw the crowns of countless trees, their colors alive with morning light. It was as though nature herself had decided to paint. In that moment, Chief Commander Obey’s words returned to my heart, songs of rain, forest, and sunshine. The eternal beauty of Nigeria.

To me, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey is not just a musician; he is divine inspiration. Like Ogun, Obatala, or Sango are deities of power and wisdom, Chief is the god of music. His voice, to me, is prophecy. When I seek clarity, I turn to his songs or to my Bible. Between both lies the sacred balance that keeps my spirit grounded and my vision alive.

And so, the journey continued, winding upward into the clouds. The Mambilla Plateau opened up like a dream made real. Canopies of trees arched gracefully over the road, while pine trees, planted decades ago by German settlers, stood in proud symmetry. Their trunks told stories of time, endurance, and quiet strength.

Soon, the vast Kakara Tea Plantation unfolded before me. A sea of green stretching endlessly, bathed in mist and sunlight. The air was sweet with the scent of tea, and every breath felt pure. Here, nature and humanity coexist in silent rhythm, the land giving abundantly to those who treat it with care.

Hidden beyond the hills lies the Mambilla Waterfall that enchanting wonder. Her waters fall in shimmering silver sheets, cascading down from the high rocks with graceful majesty. When sunlight pierces her mist, a rainbow often bows at her feet, a symbol of peace between heaven and earth.

From the bottom of the hill to Gembu, it was 122 kilometers of pure magic. As I ascended, grasslands stretched wide, valleys folded into one another, and clouds began to kiss the earth. At Chappal Waddi, Nigeria’s highest peak at 7,936 feet, I stood not beneath the clouds but among them. The air there is crisp, the silence holy. And during harmattan, the cold wind bites. A reminder that even paradise has its seasons.

Below, the Donga and Taraba Rivers meet in a sacred dance, flowing toward the Benue, and then onward to the Niger at Lokoja. A story of unity written in water. The Tunga Dam glistens like crystal, its water as clear as the Scottish springs that inspire poets. I once dipped my hand into that cool current, drank deeply, and whispered a prayer:

May my life be as calm and refreshing as this water. May Nigeria continue to bless me, and may her beauty never fade.

To visit the Mambilla Plateau is to visit heaven’s balcony, a place where the clouds descend to hold you and the breeze sings its lullaby. During the rainy season, you may find yourself standing in a cloud, wrapped in white mist, floating between sky and earth. You feel light, humbled, and whole.

From the roadside, as your eyes sweep across the endless plains below, one question arises again and again: Why are we not where we should be? But even as the thought comes, hope answers it. I believe, deeply, that in no distant future, Nigeria will rise to her greatness. Her stories will be told far and wide, her glory sung in every tongue.

As I stood there once upon a time, and as I walked this morning beneath the rain, I heard Chief Commander’s voice again in my mind:

“No place be like my country.”

And so I say, with pride and conviction:

May Nigeria succeed.

May her rivers flow forever.

May her hills whisper grace.

And may her children never tire of singing her praises.
