Little did we know that Lanre Fasasi (a.k.a) Sound Sultanâ€s 8th Wonda would be his last album. Sound Sultan as he was fondly called, made a mark on the Nigerian Entertainment Industry in his active years (alive) as a songwriter, producer, actor, comedian, instrumentalist, and amazing vocalist. His untimely death on July 11, 2021, in faraway United States of America remains a rude shock to fans and admirers of this iconic creative.

Nothing than the industry-large event would suffice than the Nigerian Entertainment Conference(NEC) – to celebrate the life of an extraordinary entertainer – who gave much of his creativity and heart – unselfishly to the benefit of all. The NEC Live series organised by the Nigerian Entertainment Today (NET) was started in 2014 by a renowned Media Executive, Adekunle Ayeni. The purpose of NEC Live was to serve as an all-day affair where crucial issues affecting the Nigerian Entertainment Industry are discussed extensively – by Industry experts and leading figures within the creative sphere in the country.

Of course, Sound Sultanâ€s life and times – are worth a National Holiday in his name. After all, New York State of the United States posthumously declared December 18 DMX Day (his birthday) in honour of the New York rapper.  He (Sound Sultan) scored more than just points at the Basketball Court, strummed the right chords on his beloved guitar, wrote more than just hit songs through his impeccable poetic endowments, did more than just been a fantastic dancer and all-round entertainer – he indeed was the Monarch of socially conscious melodies – King of Sounds (Sound Sultan, if you choose to call him that way).

NEC Live 2021 in honour of Sound Sultan was held at the ultramodern complex of Terra Arena. It is not surprising that the colour code on the solemn night of June 24, 2021 was black – a colour to show to the world that a shooting star has dropped from the galaxy. The red carpet session was replaced with a long-stretched green carpet, an emblematic representation of Sound Sultanâ€s ‘â€larger-than-lifeâ€â€ nature; the forlorn looks worn on the faces of attendees almost dampened the splendour of the exquisite Terra Arena building which beamed with lights and glamour of the Victoria Island fame.

The Night of Tribute for the phenomenal musician was characterized by a pensive mood, fewer chit-chats by array of celebrities (most of them friends and close associates of the late superstar), sparse commentary between the stars and the ever-active paparazzi team; a few hiâ€s and hellos here and there – nothing more. When Dare Fasasi (Baba Dee) walked in with the three children of the Late Sound Sultan, eyes turned in their direction and words fail many for the right expression. Afterward, the doors of the venue were flung wide open for guests to get seated; and the show began.

Vektor the Rapper delivered a solemn message cum invocation to open the floor for the big night! The line-up performances for the Sound Sultanâ€s NEC Live show culminated in his long creative journey encompassing, Music, Comedy, Poetry, Rapping, and Movies.

In the spirit of the night, a video slide of Sound Sultanâ€s life showed on the big LED screen on the center stage displaying some facets of his life.  Following up were comedy performances in which Efe Warri Boy and SLK (both of whom paid more glowing tributes to the Late Sound Sultan than cracking up ribs). 

A cover version of ‘â€Oroboâ€â€ was delivered by Azadus and Excel. After the performance of the Orobo song, Azadus made an acapella dirge rendition of his song, Say me well. The beautiful Comedienne, Chigurl was lost for hilarious delivery on this night that she turned a preacher and waxed poetically. In her words, she said: “Death is with us anywhere we go but Sound Sultan was a man who put death to shame”.

Sound Sultan was also known to be a Spoken word poet in his lifetime. To celebrate him was Sage – a veteran spoken word artiste – who performed a tribute poem in honour of a man he first met in the year 1999. The plot of the soul-lifting poem revolved around the reality of death; the impacts of Sound Sultanâ€s craft including the deceased unmistakable humanity. Johnny Drille and Aramide delivered an acoustic version of Motherland – one of the classics by Sound Sultan.

A list of tribute was offered by Paul, a media executive, and friend of Sound Sultan; Kenny Ogungbe (represented by the daughter); Olisa Adibua (celebrated On Air Personality); an Emotional outburst by Comedienne Princess (who spoke largely of childhood memories mixed with the nostalgia of early fame life – his continuous relationship as a brother in need); Emma Ugolee, Kube (a celebral palsy advocate and friend of Sound Sultan), Eldee, Segun Adefila, and TY mix. Worthy of mention is the tribute outpour from Brooklyn, New York in the United States of America – and the short video tribute from The Voice Nigeria featuring top musical acts like Darey Arts Alade, Waje, Yemi Alade, and Falz.

A cover rendition of Fayaa Fayaa by Illbliss and Vektor laddened with rap flows represented another part of Sound Sultan only a few knew. Faze, a multiple award-winning vocalist and a former member of the defunct Plantashun Boiz dressed in a Ninja black attire did a brilliant cover of another classic by Sound Sultan, Natural Something. The night wasnâ€t complete with the trio of Black Face, Faze and 2face (all of the Plantashun Boiz fame) set aside their longstanding differences of several years to perform an acapella of ‘â€Other Side of Existenceâ€â€ and ‘â€Plantashun Boiz.

Sound Sultan is without doubt a unifier of people (irrespective of tribe, status or belief system). It was indeed a wonder that key industry players, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers defiled the odds of the times to pay tribute to a great guy, Sound Sultan. His death, no doubt, has created a vacuum in the industry – one whose big shoes only a few can wear. He lived a life worthy of emulation and pioneered a movement of conscious artists whose lyrical contents bring about social discourse and the need for justice for all.

Sound Sultan on this night offered to the world another type of wonder, the ninth wonder of love, charity and friendship.

He was so daring early in life that nobody gave him any chance to live up to 87 years on this earth. But here we are: Professor Oluwole Akinwande Soyinka, that is, Wole Soyinka for short, is 87 today.

On my small part, I did not want anything to do with schooling anymore, being much of a tearaway in my youth – then I saw the name of Professor Wole Soyinka as the Head of the newly created Dramatic Arts Department at the then University of Ife.
My plans had been to head into the bush to change the system as a guerrilla fighter but once I learnt of the Soyinka school at Great Ife I applied and was taken.

Aside from his genius in literature, Soyinka ranks amongst the greatest freedom fighters ever, a foremost defender of the sanctity of human life.
The first African to win the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, he is an accomplished playwright, poet, novelist, memoirist, filmmaker, director, translator, actor, director, singer, activist, humanist, aesthete, connoisseur, and above all else, a human being, a remarkable one

Wole Soyinka threw a party for my class on graduation, declaring us the most challenging students he had ever taught. Of course everybody knows that praise from Soyinka does not come easily. His word is his sword!

This does not at any rate qualify me as an exemplary student. Back then at the University of Ife, I was with my Dramatic Arts classmates in Soyinkaâ€s house for practical lessons on television production based on Edith Uche Enemâ€s play. I did not care a kobo about the lesson. I told Soyinkaâ€s steward, the Ghanaian lad Francis, to get me a cool Star lager beer from the refrigerator. I was nursing my beer gloriously while Soyinka taught my classmates. Then he saw me drinking the beer. He didnâ€t get mad at me. He asked why I was drinking beer while my fellow students were learning and I promptly told him: “Prof, sir, thatâ€s how I get my inspiration.” Soyinka just cast a fatherly benign look at me in the manner of “some fathers do have them” and continued with his teaching.

After my degree exams, I was totally out of cash. I needed money badly, and I ran to Soyinka in his office. I told him I had no money to go home. He gave me all the money he had. In a show of bravado I told him I would pay him back his money when I came for convocation. Soyinka had a healthy laugh and said: “How am I sure you will not run through the money and come back with another sob story?”
The truth of course is that I only came to Ife because Soyinka was there. I did not care for university education. I came to Ife in 1978, with Soyinka as my Head of Department. Then there was Okot pâ€Bitek, the inimitable Ugandan poet of Song of Lawino fame, in the literature department. Soyinka was always travelling all over the world while Okot was an ever-present company. Soyinkaâ€s Ghanaian boy Francis was of course around to attend to my needs in Soyinkaâ€s gods-festooned home. Soyinkaâ€s sister, Folabo Ajayi, was also around, always wondering at my age on account of my multiform high jinks whilst we were rehearsing Akinwunmi Isolaâ€s play Madam Tinubu, directed by Femi Euba, which we took on tour to Ibadan and Lagos.

Our first experience of Soyinka as a teacher was, yes, very dramatic. He was to teach us Shakespeareâ€s King Lear. We had all come from secondary schools where Shakespeare was read line-by-line and explained by the class teacher. In Soyinkaâ€s case, we were all seated in the Pit Theatre at Ife when he casually strolled in. He distributed sheets of cyclostyled paper in which a speech taken out of King Lear was printed. Soyinka asked us to pick out the unnatural word in the speech. None of us could understand this kind of teaching. He then said we ought to have still been in high school. The West Indian lady, Dr Carroll Dawes, had to come to our rescue by teaching us King Lear, line after line, at Oduduwa Hall for weeks and months on end.

In the course of our Ife studies, we had to read up all the plays of Bertolt Brecht as our Special Author. We found to our chagrin that Brecht was a rival of Shakespeare in the large number of plays written. My classmates and I had to confront Soyinka with the charge that he was making us read for a Ph.D when we only applied to earn a bachelorâ€s degree! Soyinka asked us to arrest Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi as the culprit who gave us more books to read than doctoral candidates.

Soyinka took us on a course in Humanism. It was class war all the way because most of us in the class were Marxists. We asked Soyinka to join us in the bush of guerrilla struggle instead of being an arm-chair humanist! He was never angry with our youthful ebullition, only advising us that we would get to understand society further as we grew in life. Interestingly, the very next year, Soyinka asked a Polish lady who barely spoke English to take us in the course of Aesthetics in his place! We were thus denied of arguing with the lady as we argued with Soyinka.

His intervention on road safety happened before our very eyes whilst at Ife. He had no stomach whatsoever for dangerous driving that killed many along the notorious Ife-Ibadan road. He would bring his friend Femi Johnsonâ€s jeeps into the campus and we were even quite used to Bola Igeâ€s vehicles as the then Governor of Oyo State. For Soyinka, a vehicle was just a vehicle.

After leaving school, I tried my hands at peasant theatre. I sent the play I wrote, A Play of Ghosts, to Soyinka and it was only much later that I got to know that he forwarded the play to the American director, Chuck Mike, for production. Soyinka does all these favours without asking for any attention whatsoever.

When I ran into Soyinka at poet Odia Ofeimunâ€s birthday party he wondered aloud where I had been all these years. I replied him that I had all along been in Nigeria “doing a great battle with Nigerian poverty”. At the time his memoirs You Must Set Forth At Dawn was published, I learnt from the novelist Okey Ndibe that Soyinka was to do a reading for an organization ran by white ladies in the heart of Victoria Island, Lagos. When Okey and I got to the venue Soyinka asked me to select the passage that he would read. I told him I did not have a copy of the book ready to hand. He off-handedly told me that his publisher, Bankole Olayebi, was my friend in which case I would not have much trouble getting a free copy!

Of course I am very proud of my teacher, the very first black man to win the coveted Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. Back in time, my crystal ball did not hide anything when it revealed to me that Soyinka would win the Nobel, a first for Africa, in the year 1985. I told not a few friends that the Nobel was definitely coming that year, and it was such a shocker when the prize went instead to the obscure French novelist Claude Simon. Well, it is remarkable that Claude Simonâ€s first novel bears the very unfunny title, The Cheat.

There was no denying Soyinka the very next year, 1986, when the Nobel Prize for Literature landed in our shores. Soyinka had just made the flight from Cornell University, New York where he was then teaching, to the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in Paris to attend the executive meeting of the world body which he headed. His plan was to spend quiet time at the apartment of his cousin Yemi Lijadu. He found his cousin giddy with joy: “The news just broke that Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka had won the 1986 Nobel Prize for Literature, thus becoming the first African to win the coveted award.”

For reasons no one can really explain, the name “Kongi” has stuck with Soyinka amongst his students and colleagues even though the character in question in the eponymous play is highly detestable. Behind Soyinkaâ€s back, some of us call him “Langage”, pronounced as “Longage”, taken from his Inaugural Lecture at Ife entitled The Critic And Society: Barthes, Leftocracy And Other Mythologies.

Soyinkaâ€s collection of poetry, Samarkand and Other Markets I have Known, was launched in 2002 at the National Theatre under a tree that is now known as the Samarkand Tree. Soyinka autographed my copy of the book right under that famous tree. The long poem “Elegy for a Nation” dedicated to Chinua Achebe at Seventy is quite striking. Soyinka had wanted to read the poem at “An Evening With WS” sponsored by Globacom, but there was too much noise at the Golden Gate, Ikoyi venue such that it did not provide the right mood for the Nobel Laureate to pay homage to his great compatriot. It was at that event that I asked Soyinka the question: “Why are you not a born-again Christian?” He duly replied thusly: “I have my own religion; thank you!” It is a matter of great joy that Soyinka still continues in the onerous task of supporting younger writers like the irrepressible Onyeka Nwelue. I treasure on my bookshelf a hardback copy of The Second Genesis: An Anthology Of Contemporary World Poetry which features some of my poems alongside those of my teacher Soyinka and my dear compatriots Ikeogu Oke and Obari Gomba. The book which features poets of 60 countries from Albania to the United States is indeed a heavy feast of comparative humanity, a cause to which Soyinka has dedicated his venerated life.

Soyinka is at heart a jovial soul. From teaching the art of wine to a young Italian girl to setting a trap for wine-stealers in his then Ife home, Soyinka is the master of his universe. Humour is never lacking in his forte. For instance, an Igbo classmate of mine with a thick Igbo accent asked Soyinka a question in class only for Soyinka to reply: “Are you an Ibadan man?”

At Freedom Park, Lagos, during the 60th birthday celebration of Kunle Ajibade, the journalist “jailed for life” by General Sani Abacha, Soyinkaâ€s kind and personable wife, Folake Wole-Soyinka, provided two thousand naira for the Nobel Laureate to give to Adunni and her Nefertiti dancers only for WS to sharply nick one thousand naira into his own pocket and give the musicians the remaining one thousand naira!

Wole Soyinka is still as fecund as ever. I was so happy to break the world exclusive news of Soyinka publishing his third novel, Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth, just after the wave of the Covid-19 onslaught. The great man is still hard at work, writing more immortal books.

It beggars belief that Soyinka made it to the heavy age of 87 after a life of multiform dangers: an unknown gunman invading the broadcasting house to replace the premierâ€s tape, going to Biafra in a season of anomie, enduring imprisonment and solitary confinement, bearing the wounds of exile, daring Abacha etc. In short, way beyond the claims of the evangelical churches, the only miracle I see is Wole Soyinkaâ€s life.

Well, finally, I have enough strength and fortitude to write this tribute in honour of my friend, mentor and benevolent supporter, TB. Joshua. I must confess it’s been so difficult for me to come to terms with the rude shock of a passing so monumental. It took me this long because the sledgehammer of his passing on the heart, the psyche was just unimaginable. I just didn’t have enough presence of mind to put the right words on paper. Or how do you begin to write in the past tense, the life of a man you spoke with few days earlier and who never showed any inkling of the sad epiphany that the end in this mortal terrain was near? How do you string together enough words to tell the world that this man they knew was more than the man they knew? How do you recall the wonderful times when a man’s humanity truly shone like millions of watts of light?

TB Joshua was a man of astonishing mould, a non-pareil specimen of God’s deft creative hands. He was the cornucopia of man’s true rise from grass to grace. He was a guy who defied unimaginable poverty to carve a niche for himself, choosing the path of service. From what seemed like a crude, rustic beginning, this man surprised us by rising through the doldrums of obscurity to the high pedestals of international renown. He was our Number 1 religious tourism ambassador. From the far reaches of the world, pilgrims came in droves in search of compassion and redemption. Through him, our nation Nigeria, in spite of the sham caused by political maladventure, became the bride of millions of citizens of the world who craved to see the very land that produced such a man.

You may not like his style of Christianity but you can never deny his place as a true pride of our nation. At least he made the world believe that something good can come from this hapless land! TB Joshua’s ministry was that of God’s compassion and His unimaginable love. He made charity look so effortless and selfless-giving a way of life. His passion for the downtrodden and underprivileged warmed our hearts.

TB Joshua’s door was open to the High and Mighty just as it was always ajar for the ordinary folks in the streets. He dined with the physically challenged, transforming their lives in many amazing ways. The elderly had a dream life with TB Joshua. His memorable trips to the homes of the aged and dying, giving them joy brought tears of joy to our eyes. His snuggling up to the leppers and mendicants of Oko-Oba settlements remain unsurpassed by his contemporaries. His eye-goggling display of practical Christianity and the power of grace and Chris-like redemption amazed even the worst of sceptics.

Even those who were not of the Christian faith were awed by his acts of faith and love. According to one Suleiman Alhassan on Facebook, “Not minding my religious background, I had always loved his commitment and dedication to the service of God and humanity. He lived for others and though died in his prime, he recreated himself in a lot of people through his selflessness. I use this opportunity to condole the family and indeed his multitude of members across the world. May he find eternal peace with the Lord. Amen.”

Popular TV man BABAJIDE KOLADE OTITOJU could not contain his respect for Joshua. He wrote: “Prophet TB Joshua. You will be sorely missed for your philanthropy. My last two bibles were gifts from your humble self. RIP.” Another observer of this unique life, Adisa Oluwasegunfunmi Edwards wrote, “We lost a real and rare gem. ÃŒgbà táa bá kú tán là Å„ dère (We only become idolised after we’ve gone). May his gentle soul continue to rest peacefully well.”

These were just a few heartfelt tributes in a deluge of effusive commendations from the nation and the world’s high and mighty and the millions of ordinary folks on our universal streets. According to a man who lived around the precincts of the church headquarters in Lagos, one of the thousands of Joshua’s neighbours who had over the years been beneficiaries of a man’s amazing love, “We are all orphans with this singular death.”

TB Joshua was a man of huge and practical faith. He was a Prophet who believed that as God’s children, in spite of the drudgery and vagaries of life, we must live in eternal mornings. That was why there is never afternoon nor evening when you’re greeted or welcomed to the church. So it should not surprise you when you visit at twilight and you are welcomed with the greeting, “Good Morning.”

This at first was unclear to me personally. Why would these people keep greeting me “Good morning in the afternoon”? In time, deep reflection on this symbolic gesture made it all plain to me! With Joshua, life was always a new opportunity, a fresh day in the hollow of God’s hands. He never believed in the dusks, the dark parts of existence. He wanted the world to know that in faith, man will never have to wallow in the harsh realities of life’s afternoons or the dampening happenings of dusk. To him, a Christian’s life deserved to be spent in the freshness, the calm and the soothing dews of perpetual mornings.

When he was hit by tragedy and those he considered his children died, he expected his nation, his own people to understand, to commisserate even when they tried to unravel the truth. He was like a voice crying in the wilderness. The prophet’s homeland refused to come forward with the love the prophet deserved. What message has his Maker now sent to us as a nation? Is it not something like, “Since you do not value this immeasurable gift, let me as well bring him back into my bosom of true love.”

Despite his immense acts of unimaginable love, many despised him, many pilloried him, many excoriated him but he was unperturbed. He never replied his critics directly as far as I know. He carried on with the act of faith, carrying his own cross with admirable calm and equanimity. He ignored his own human frailty while his devoted his body and soul to the welfare and not of others. Even when he hurt, he never showed it publicly. He immersed himself in the deluge of his mission, soothing, helping, healing and making the burden of others his own. One day I saw him looking really tired and, worried, I told him to try and take some vacation. His response was his infectious smile and the quip: “How can a pastor rest when there are so many souls to win and many to help?”

If there was any tragedy in the glorious passing of TB Joshua, it was the tragedy of a man who gave his last drop in the service of others. His passion about the gospel of redemption was amazing; his commitment to the salvation of errant souls was unmatched. For over 20 years I watched him from close quarters. There were no airs around him. He had a good laugh and infectiously funny. He was always curious about events in the nation and the world. He was always concerned about the tragedies that have befallen our nation in recent years. His love for his nation was deep.

And it showed when other nations asked him to relocate to their climes, desirous of tapping on the anointing and his immense popularity. But he refused to abandon his motherland. He showed that his National Award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic was no fluke, one of the exceptional and truly deserved gesture of a grateful nation when things were normal at the top.

His love for people would be his immediate legacy, his acts of astonishing philanthropy and his generous disposition. The fact that thousands besieged the church wailing and rolling on the floor with a deep sense of loss was no fluke. Those were among the thousands of souls he had impacted on so deeply. How many scholarships for the poor? How many hungry home he had returned the smile of love to with timely donation of money and food items, and how many homes on the verge of wrecking he had helped to get away from the precipice! How many dreams on the verge of despair he truly restored to the path of fulfillment! How many forlorn hope, racked by poverty he did restore to the path of hope attained! TB Joshua helped many of us, so many of us achieve our rendezvous with destiny.

Since he died, Oh! did he really die? some fellows, so puny in number and in true humanity, now have the balls to wait till a man is gone and is unable to reply before you attack him? What manner of minds are those?

How many of these critics were really there for the people like Joshua was? How many times did they impact on people, loving their neighbours like themselves. It’s not for me to judge TB Joshua but as a journalist, I was living witness to many of his good deeds. Let me reveal this to you.

I went to him about one of our colleagues, a former ThisDay Marketing Executive who was very sick and needed an urgent operation. He never met her. She never wrote anything for him. She needed N5million and she had exhausted all her means. TB Joshua asked me and some other journalists to come back the next day with the lady’s husband. I called my colleagues and we went. When we got there we were shocked to see N5million cash waiting for us. He prayed and said go and do your best for her. The husband nearly collapsed with shock. He had gone through hell for months, incurring enormous debts and here was a sudden act of compassion that erased so many of those debts! We never published the N5m story because he said he didn’t want his token publicised. He pleaded and we respected his wishes. But now that he’s no more, I think it’s better to let the world know another side of a truly amazing human.

So many such interventions over the years. He might have had his weaknesses which is not my position to judge but his humanity, his compassion for others was real. When God said “Judge Not”, He really knew what He was doing? Who gave these people the right to judge? And how best can a man display his faith if not through unalloyed love and compassion? TB Joshua was the practical symbol of God’s unspeakable love.

To Mama Evelyn TB Joshua, his family, disciples, all I can say is that you must brace up for the challenges ahead. If it has been very difficult for me to come to terms with the harsh reality of the Prophet not being physically here, and have not even had the courage to go to his home and not meet him, I can imagine the situation you great people must be in now. But I admire your courage and the impressive fortitude with which you have handled this monumental transition.

I thank you for holding the fort so well. The Prophet’s work of faith and charity must not stop. Sometimes, when you suffer a loss this monumental, you may think that all has ended. No, my friends, it’s just another beginning, always another beginning. You have a huge legacy to keep alive. Your work has already been cut out for you. You must sustain those great works of philanthropy. Giving was TB Joshua’s exceptional ministry. Compassion was his forte.

That compassion must not fizzle out. You must hold the dream and sustain the fire of love that burned so brilliantly in your founder’s heart. Mummy Evelyn TB Joshua, Prophet Chris, Prophet Racine, Prophet Angela, Prophet Bisola, Brother Joseph, Sisters Lamide, Elizabeth, Cindy, Brother Shina and all those wonderful people I met along the wonderful paths of my relationship with this great soul, you must come together to sustain this church under the guidance of God Almighty. Never let the kind of compassion that was the hallmark of your church fizzle out.

The good Lord gave us TB Joshua, the good Lord has now decided to take home his beloved. We are grateful, Lord, even as we have tears in our eyes, for this immeasurable gift.

We heard it last during the heydays of Donald Rumsfeld under George Bush – and judge in what condition it has left that part of the world, and beyond.

Rumsfeldâ€s namesake- a sobering coincidence- also spat the same gung-ho rhetoric. That Donald once ordered his uniformed forces to “go out there” and “dominate the environment,” following civilian protests at extra-judicial killings of blacks by state police.

Soon enough, leaving nothing to chance, that Donald II seized on the first opportunity to personally mobilise a mob to “dominate” Capitol Hill, his own seat of government that was clearly slipping from his control.

Optimists are free to underplay that threat to the much-acclaimed democratic beacon. Study that scenario carefully, however, and you find it is not a question of: it could never have succeeded. Such surmises are wrong, it COULD HAVE SUCCEEDED, albeit with unpredictable consequences for America and the world.

And so, when the elected head of a democratic state, like Nigeria, not perched precariously on the knife-edge of power, but with a couple more years in the kitty, threatens to “shock” dissidents, we should indeed be shocked out of any complacency.

Even if history has been deliberately eliminated from the schoolâ€s curriculum, memory suffices to jerk us into a watchful, precautionary alert.

I hold no brief for those who resort to burning down police stations, slaughter their occupants, simply for the crime of earning a measly monthly pittance, torch electoral offices, assassinate politicians in calculated effort to set sections of the country against others in the promotion of their own political goals.

These are largely nihilists, psychopaths and/or criminal lords, soul mates of Boko Haram, ISWAP, Daâ€esh and company, not to be confused with genuine liberators.

All over the world, throughout history, elections are denounced, boycotted and generally delegitimised without recourse to wanton butchery. When, however, a head of state threatens to “shock” civilian dissidents, to “deal with them in the language they understand,” and in a context that conveniently brackets opposition to governance with any bloodthirsting enemies of state, we have to call attention to the precedent language of such a national leader under even more provocative, nation disintegrative circumstances.

What a pity, and what a tragic setting, to discover that this language was accessible all the time to President Buhari, where and when it truly mattered, when it would have been not only appropriate, but deserved and mandatory!

When Benue was first massively brought under siege, with the massacre of innocent citizens, the destruction of farms, mass displacement, followed by alien occupation, Buhariâ€s language- both as utterance and as what is known as “body language”- was of a totally different temper.

It was diffident, conciliatory, even apologetic. After much internal pressure, he eventually visited the scene of slaughter. His language? Learn to live peacefully with your neighbours. The expected language, rationally and legitimately applied to the aggressors, was exactly what we now hear- “I shall shock you. I shall deal with you in the language you understand.”

That language was missing at the moment that mattered most. It remained “missing in action” for years until a belated “shoot at sight” outburst. Too late, and of course, inappropriately phrased. The precedent had been set, the genie let out of the bottle, consolidating a culture of impunity that predictably spread its bloody stain all over the nation.

Buhariâ€s recent deployment of this language is thus wrongly targeted, and tragically untimely. Even while he was threatening dissidents, an agenda of both secessionism and alien occupation was taking place not too distant from Aso Rock. ISWAP was taking over the already excised territories of Shekauâ€s Boko Haram, appointing new warlords of the occupational forces, sectioning Nigeria into vassal states and unfurling their replacement flags of domination. Soon, logically, ISWAPâ€s letters of diplomatic accreditation will be presented in Aso Rock?

We must, however, backtrack a little- that is the function of memory. It would be false to suggest that these eggs of impunity are newly laid. They have been incubating in loathsome hatcheries of power and domination for years, even decades, and now the raptors have been hatched and taken wings.

The political culture of the devilâ€s bargain, of denial, evasion, avoidance of constitutional mandates, the culture of “appeasement of the unappeasable”- to quote myself- in order to gratify the vested interests of a narrow, power obsessed elite has blossomed. Finally, the chickens have come home to roost.

The evocation of the civil war, where millions of civilians perished, is an unworthy emotive ploy that has run its course. In any case- and this has been voiced all too often, and loudly- the nation is already at war, and of a far more potentially devastating dimension than it has ever known.

Every single occupant of this nation space called Nigeria has been declared potential casualty, children being pushed to the very battlefront, without a semblance of protective cover. We have betrayed the future. We need no breast beating about past wars. The world has moved on, so have nations. Some, however, prefer to move backwards. The continent is full of these atavists.

In Nigeria, powerful cliques of this persuasion still roam the corridors of power. We are indeed at war. It does not take the formal declaration of hostilities, with or without lethal bombardments, for a nation to find itself shell-shocked. The populace of this nation is already in that shell-shocked condition. So, what is there left to shock?

It is time to think “outside the box.” That many, in so doing, find no landing place, except dissolution, is not a crime. It is not peculiar to any peoples, and is embedded in the ongoing history of many, and not only on this continent. It is their natural right as free citizens, not slaves of habit and indoctrination.

Where disillusion rides high, sentiment tumbles earthwards, and the only question becomes: What can be salvaged? It thus remains the responsibility of leadership to persuade them, through both discourse and remedial action, that there are other options. Attempted bullying is not a language of discourse, nor the facile ploy of tarring all birds with the same feather.

I shall end on a personal note. It was not intended but, in view of breast thumping rhetoric by one president after the other over military sacrifice- undeniable, certainly- such recalls should be considered salutary.

The heroic exploits of our military in confronting some of the deadliest internal forces of dehumanisation deserve their place of honour, not only in history, but in contemporary consciousness. However, let not the military fail to take its place centrally in the nationâ€s ongoing, unavoidable soul searching. And so to an instructive intervention by this “bloody civilian,” in what should be an exclusionary portfolio of the keepers of a nationâ€s mandate for secure existence.

It took months for me to effect a meeting, agreed in principle, with a former National Security Adviser (NSA). It took that long only because I refused to meet him within the country, since it had become clear that the security forces, in addition to high levels of governance, had become infiltrated by the very vicious elements that have fully established and sustained a lethal dimension. I was not about to let myself be “sold out” to unseen forces in my eagerness to sound an oppressive warning.

We eventually met in London. The records, I am certain, will be found in the national security files and, in any case, I went accompanied. My mission was straightforward- to let him know that the nation was under siege, that the nomadic herdsmen that then threaded the forests were of a different breed from those whom we normally encountered in that environment that was also close to second home to some of us. We met.

That NSA assured me that the military was aware of this, and that his mission to the United States was to negotiate the purchase of spotter planes to patrol the forest routes. I retreated, satisfied, to my normal preoccupations. No, not entirely true- I did take other supplementary steps internally, including meetings with high-level state officials in the West.

Now comes the rub! Imagine the chagrin, this past week or two, as revelations emerged, 10 years after that meeting, of humungous amounts from oil resources being found in the US offshore accounts of that pivotal figure of any nationâ€s security architecture! Is that an exceptional tale? Not in the least! He is not the first multi-starred general to be thus exposed, some even brought to trial.

While Boko Haram was consolidating, a nationâ€s security Czar was also consolidating his nest egg with funds meant for elimination of a national scourge.

Shock? No. Civil society already has a superabundance of the military shock treatment!

Fellow Africans, please, permit me to make an open and audacious declaration today. No Professor of Business Management or Mass Communication could have published Ovation International successfully for the period of time that we have done. I apologise if it sounds immodest but thatâ€s not my intention. It is a fact thatâ€s solidly backed by 25 years of an epic journey and with the sight of many would be competitors sadly falling by the wayside within a short time of debuting.

One of the most frequently asked questions everywhere I go is how have we managed to keep Ovation going when much older, bigger and richer publications have long collapsed, dead and buried? I will try to expose some of the strategies that have truly helped us, since April 1996, when the first copy rolled out, like a new-born baby.

First, we had limited funds, so we were forced to be disciplined or perish before we even started. I must expressly state and reiterate my oft repeated expression that publishing is the ultimate casino. If youâ€re not a compulsive gambler, donâ€t even go near it. We were ready to sacrifice everything possible to sustain this amazing dream and the heavens know that we have done so. It is by the grace of God that, in the words of my cherished and adored brother, Professor Dele Ajayi, “we have not lost our shirt”! We had abundant faith in our abilities and capabilities as a team but the only thing we lacked was funding.

After the initial take off plank provided by my Uncle, Chief Ezekiel Olasunmoye Fatoye, it has been a battle of wits these last twenty-five years. The more money we spent, the more we needed to sustain the brand. We were never ready to produce a mediocre magazine. We went for the best printers, photographers, designers, cameras, drum scanners, international cargo companies, in order to source, obtain, produce and deliver extraordinary stories, special events, global travels, super adventures, and so on. We simply went all out to make our dream and vision a reality and God has helped us tremendously.

From the outset, we decided on publishing a world class magazine. We chose our niche, the lifestyle of the rich and famous, the celebration of achievers, celebrities, entertainers and sportsmen. We knew that to penetrate this genre of personages, we must operate like a member of the privilegentsia. We must talk the talk, and walk the walk, and essentially look the part. We also knew that this would cost money. Every copy of the magazine must be a collectorâ€s item, attractively readable but not disposable. We wanted it to be an integral part of the lifestyle of the rich and famous that we chronicled. We were under no illusions that this would be tough, rough and tedious. Naysayers said that we were too ambitious, that our quality was way too high to be sustainable. But we were not going to compromise on our incredible quality in order to make ends meet. We owed it a duty to our readers, advertisers and clients in general to keep the fire of beautiful African journalism burning.

We chose our focus and developed it. We decided to go against the norm by publishing positive stories about Africa, Africans and Blacks of African descent, wherever they are on this planet. Again, doubters told us only bad news attract the biggest readership. We were told Africa did not have enough of good stories to tell and sell. They were right and wrong at the same time because we were ready to create what did not exist. For every David Beckham, we decided that we shall respond with George Weah, John Fashanu, Nwankwo Kanu, Tony Yeboah, Austin Jay Okocha, Didier Drogba, Finidi George, Quinton Fortune, Mikel Obi, Abedi Pele, Sunday Oliseh, Michael Essien, Taribo West, Daniel Amokachi, Shola Ameobi, Asamoah Gyan, and so many others. For every Richard Branson, we shall line up Moshood Abiola, Antonio Fernandez, Mike Adenuga Jr, Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu, Jim Ovia, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and others. We shall tap into our robust arts, culture and literature and parade Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Buchi Emecheta, Ben Okri, Chimamanda Adichie, and others.

We showcased the most beautiful Black homes on earth. For every Bishopâ€s Avenue or Knightsbridge in London, we photographed eye-popping edifices in Ikoyi and Victoria Island, in Maiduguri and Kano and in Oguta and Benin. The world must know and see that Africa is rising. The world must notice us by fire, by force. In music, in sports, in business, in fashion, in hospitality, and all fields of human endeavours, we are thriving. We decided not to discriminate against anyone. Every soul must have a voice even if we disagree vehemently with the person. This approach turned out to give us the biggest headache. Many Nigerians did not know the difference between reportage and opinions. Every feature is regarded as an opinion and promotion. It remains a miracle that we survived the plethora of attacks against us. But we remained undaunted. We are now vindicated. Our inimitable style is regularly unashamedly duplicated and mimeographed by the species we have spawned.

Our niche market was clear. Ovation was designed primarily as a magazine for the upper class elites but it was also aspirational in nature. If you get hold of a copy, it must inspire you to dream big. And we are happy and proud to say that we achieved this. Too many budding young artistes, fashion designers and sporting talents have expressed their appreciation to us for providing them with the inspiration and platform to achieve their dreams.

Access became our biggest asset. We were able to connect to the high and mighty. We built on our integrity and trustworthiness. Of course, many emergency publishers emerged from nowhere and began to try to imitate, and sometimes intimidate us because of their vaunted deep pockets, but we were too confident to be bullied by those who thought money was all that was needed. Our foray into other African countries also helped our brand. We soon became the interconnectivity that Africa badly and urgently needed.

Africa should no longer be synonymous with wars, diseases and famine. A new Africa must emerge where an individual, Dr Mike Adenuga Jr would singlehandedly lay submarine cables from Europe to Africa and change the lives of millions on the continent as a result. A Tony Elumelu would grow a global bank in about 20 countries and empower new entrepreneurs in all African countries. A Philip Emeagwali will feature on the cover of a magazine for designing the fastest computers and not for internet fraud. A Keem Belo-Osagie will be a case study and academic icon at Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard.

We set forth to work and navigate our ways through the labyrinth of a thousand daemons. Our tall dreams soon became our albatross. According to Chief Moshood Abiola “the bigger the head, the bigger the headache…” We confronted many challenges, and soon ran out of funds. Many friends tried to help but what was needed was much bigger than their strength could muster. There were times I considered packing it up or handing it all over to a moneybag in order to free myself from the bondage of perpetual stress. I wrote to Dr Mike Adenuga Jr to please take over the company from me while I would just be his staff. He responded by telling me to work harder. “Ovation is your baby; I canâ€t take it from you.” The message rekindled my determination. On another occasion years after, I ran into Dr Adenuga and his adorable wife, Mrs Titi Adenuga, at Hilton Park Lane, when Chief Igbinedion marked his 70th birthday dinner some 18 years ago. Dr Adenuga was happy to see me and promised to ask GLO to give us massive support. This was a turning point. Only God can thank him for this stupendous support. Whenever business slowed down, the Spirit of Africa would miraculously emerge from nowhere and solve our problems. I once told him that our relationship was definitely spiritual. He told me he loves reading everything I write and even refers to himself as a student of the Dele Momodu school of writing. Imagine such generous words from one Iroko tree that everyone would love to touch.

We made sure we invested heavily in our products. We were lucky to embrace social media before most journalists realised the times have changed. This was another game changer for us. Not just that, we became the connecting bridge between the old and the young. We updated ourselves and upgraded our art and our craft regularly in order to keep up with the times. We knew this was going to be a long-distance race and we were prepared for every eventuality.

Weâ€ve added The Boss newspaper (an online publication for those who value the news behind the news. For example, we broke the news of the boardroom coup at First Bank days ago). By introducing Ovation International Television, we now seriously contend for anything media by being a one stop company. Our Public Relations capacity and capabilities are super-hot.

Interestingly, and graciously, I was awarded honorary Fellowship of the African Public Relations Association (APRA), in Kigali, Rwanda, two years ago. Most of the famous African men and women have been featured by Ovation International. Many diplomats have told me how they buy Ovation International as a catalogue for studying whoâ€s who in Africa and Nigeria in particular. It is such a big honour to be so relevant.

Many magazines also came out to compete with us but sadly none had the stamina or staying power. The occasional competition pushed us harder, but we never felt threatened at any time. One of our biggest strategies was the launch of the Ovation Platinum Club, a membership only elite group for special corporate organisations. There is a hefty annual fee attached to it, but it gives the clients global access to our services. The first bank to sign the package was Access Bank, under the leadership of Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. This package further provides us sufficient cash flow annually. It also eliminates the need of going cap in hand begging governments for patronage, which we have always been determined to avoid because it would otherwise compromise our integrity and independence.

We are truly exploratory and original. We are quite versatile and will not relent or rest on our oars. The journey has been long and tortuous, but itâ€s been worth the pain and pleasure…

TRIBUTE TO SHOLA AND FUNSHO OSHUNKEYE

Journalists hardly have the luxury of time and space to celebrate themselves, but we must try to do on special occasions such as this. One of Africaâ€s journalism icons, Mr Shola Oshunkeye, recently turned 65 on April 20, while his ever-radiant wife, Funsho turns 60 today.

Our paths crossed in June 1989 at the Weekend Concord where Oshunkeye and I both became star writers. After I left in May 1990 we kept in touch. I followed his meteoric rise as a reporter and prose stylist. I was unsurprised about his accomplishments because he is a tireless, dogged and adventurous reporter who gets his scoops because of these attributes based on the foundation laid by our boss Mr Mike Awoyinfa.

Born in Ilesa, Osun State, Shola Oshunkeye studied Science Technology at the University of Lagos. He quit Nigeriaâ€s Federal Civil Service after 17 years of meritorious service to begin his journalism career in 1989 at Concord Press of Nigeria, as a Senior Correspondent with Nigeriaâ€s first Saturday newspaper, Weekend Concord. Within 5 years he had been promoted Deputy News Editor in December 1991 to Associate Editor in October 1994.

Following the proscription of Concord Press, Oshunkeye was appointed Editor of Weekend Classique, a Lagos-based tabloid, in June 1994. He returned to Weekend Concord as Associate Editor in October 1994 after the ban was lifted. On December 1, 1999, he was named Editor of the best-selling newspaper.

In May 2001, Oshunkeye became the Associate Editor and Abuja Bureau Chief of TELL, Nigeriaâ€s largest circulating weekly newsmagazine at the time. He was later accredited to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, as State House Correspondent He became a Senior Associate Editor with TELL till he joined The Sun Publishing Limited in November 2005, as General Editor. In February 2008, Oshunkeye was named Editor of the newest title in the Sunâ€s stable, The Spectator. He was later appointed General Editor, Magazines, for the group and then General Editor, West Coast, covering Benin Republic to the Gambia.

On December 1, 2013, he was named Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Ghana Limited. Oshunkeye retired from The Sun Publishing group in 2016. Together with other professional friends, he founded The Crest Publishing and Entertainment Company Limited, publishers of The Crest Online newspaper and proprietors of The Crest Journalism Enhancement Foundation, CJEF. Oshunkeye is the President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

A much-respected journalist, Shola Oshunkeye is Fellow of The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, St. Petersburg, Florida, and The Media Project; He is also Fellow of the CNN International Professional Programme and an alumnus of the United States Department of Stateâ€s International Visitor Leadership Programme. He has attended several international conferences on power reporting and investigative journalism.

Among other awards, he was winner of the Best Print Journalist Award of the Nigerian Media Merit Award, 1996, and the overall winner of the prestigious CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the Year, 2006.

Shola Oshunkeye is married to Funsho, a seasoned administrator-turned-school proprietor. The family is blessed with children and grandchildren.

I salute Shola and Funsho Oshunkeye and raise a special toast to his lovely and adorable wife, Funsho, who turns 60 today.
