Iseyin a town in Oyo State played host to different prominent sons and daughters over the weekend as one of their most respected illustrious sons and musical icons was laid to rest.

Professor YK Ajao born 72 years ago at Iseyin and whose real names are Yekeen Kolawole Ademola Ajao started his musical romance with older musicians at the age of 9.

Later in 1971 he had his musical tutelage under Captain R Ade who taught him how to play the guitar. Later on he trained under one Captain Olu.

It was a common practice with musicians of that generation to at least learn how to play one musical instrument and also train under a leading musician for better musical performance and dexterity .

Music for YK Ajao didn’t come as a bed of roses as his parents objected to his musical ambition . During several interviews YK Ajao has described how his father particularly was against his musical career. For YK Ajao having made remarkable success in Juju Music he always advise parents not to go against whatever choice of career their children decide to pursue .

YK Ajao started his own band in the year 1973 and named it YK Ajao and his Professional Brothers Band. His first album was released in 1973 and titled “ Soro Mi Dayo Oluwa. YK’s musical sojourn can be likened to the story of Abraham Lincoln. A story of what persistency and endurance can eventually give birth to .

According to YK Ajao he released over twenty four albums before he had his first major musical breakthrough in 1991 with the Evergreen song Juju Makosa Series.

His Juju Makosa Style took the airwaves by storm and became a signature tune in many homes in Nigeria and abroad. Many likened his style of music and voice to that of Chief Commander Ebenezer obey. YK’s musical style was fast tempo and entertaining.

YK Ajao’s burial no doubt was historical as many popular musicians were at Iseyin to pay their Last respect. Musicians like Sir Shina Peters made a heartwarming tributes to him and also visited the family others were Adewale Ayuba, Sefiu Alao, Kunle Opio, Musiliu Ishola, Alhaja Awele, etc

Iseyin also played host to other prominent Iseyin sons and daughters like CEO Honeyland School( Pastor James Alayande, Dr Sulaiman Abiola ( Yoybittters), Sir Shina Peller, Nike Pelller, Rasak Olayiwola ( Ojopagogo), Afeez Oyetoro, etc

We pray for the family of YK Ajao that the soul of their dearly beloved will rest in peace and his son’s shoe Lateef Owolabi Ajao Aka Macosa Prince will fits well into his father’s own.

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, on Tuesday marked his 20th coronation anniversary with a colourful ceremony that featured the installation of new chiefs in Egbaland.

Oba Gbadebo, who ascended the throne on November 19, 2005, as the 10th Alake of Abeokuta and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, presided over the event attended by eminent traditional rulers, titled chiefs, government dignitaries, political leaders and business figures from within and outside Egbaland.

Among the key highlights of the ceremony was the conferment of the prestigious title of Ogboye of Egbaland on Chief Samuel Oluwadairo, described by the palace as a prominent recipient in this year’s installation.

According to the palace statement, the Ogboye title is “one of the top-ranked Egba traditional chieftaincy titles approved by the state government,” and its holder sits with the Alake-in-Council in administering the affairs of the entire Egba Kingdom.

Chief Oluwadairo’s wife, Regina Oluwadairo, was also installed as the new Erelu-Ogboye of Egbaland, complementing her existing title as the Seriki Iya-Abiye of Egbaland.

Performing the installations, Oba Gbadebo prayed for divine wisdom and guidance for the new chiefs, urging them to uphold exemplary conduct and demonstrate leadership in their new roles.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Oluwadairo expressed deep gratitude to the monarch for the honour, describing the Ogboye title as “a call to service” that comes with weighty responsibilities.

“I feel so honoured, privileged and excited to be installed as the new Ogboye of Egbaland. By the grace of God, I am prepared to live up to the expectations of our highly revered Oba, the people of Abeokuta and the entire Egbaland,” he said.

He pledged to promote peace and unity across Egba communities and to embark on empowerment initiatives aimed at enhancing the economic well-being of the people. He also prayed for Oba Gbadebo, wishing him many more years of a peaceful and progressive reign.

The newly installed Erelu-Ogboye, Chief Regina Oluwadairo, expressed joy at her elevation and promised to support her husband while continuing her work to improve the welfare of children in Egbaland.

The palace described the anniversary and installations as significant milestones in Oba Gbadebo’s reign, reinforcing traditional leadership and community development across Egbaland.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka played host to the 36th Conference of the Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), where Rashidat Olamidayo Ajakaye delivered a thought-provoking presentation that left attendees buzzing with discussion. Titled, “The Predominance of the English Language and the Fate of Yoruba Language in Social Media Space: Literature of Internet Practices,” Ajakaye’s talk centered on the challenges faced by the Yoruba language in navigating the digital landscape with also proffering practicable remedies to the failing fate of Yoruba Language.

Held from October 21st to 25th (2025), under the theme “Nigerian Languages in the Digital Era,” the conference brought together linguists, researchers, and language enthusiasts to explore the dynamic intersection of language and technology. Ajakaye’s presentation was a highlight of the event, impressing attendees with its eloquent delivery and compelling research findings. She disclosed Yoruba stories on internet practices with cognizance of both common and uncommon styles that Nigerian speakers divide the prestige of Yoruba.

Similarly, Ajakaye’s research painted a vivid picture of the struggles of the Yoruba language in the digital space, where English reigns supreme. The study revealed some critical issues impacting the usage of Yoruba in social media. For one, there’s a major absence of Yoruba in intracultural communication online. This absence contributes to a potential loss of cultural meaning as users frequently code-switch to English. Also, the difficulties posed by Yoruba diacritics on standard internet keyboards further hinder the language’s digital adoption; she also hammered on the uncalculated inferior response to English Translation prompts by Yoruba Nigerian speakers who seem to fall in subjugation to the internet space only because it is a foreign innovation.

The presentation concluded on a sobering note: the heavy reliance on English by Yoruba speakers and linguists has weakened the position of Yoruba in the digital space. However, Ajakaye didn’t just stop at highlighting the problems. The researcher offered concrete recommendations aimed at bolstering the presence of Yoruba online. Ajakaye stressed the need for intellectuals and humanitarian workers in Yoruba-speaking communities to collaborate with software developers and cultural practitioners to document the language. Moreover, Ajakaye called on the government to establish policies that promote the natural acquisition of fluent Yoruba speaking and writing.

Attendees lauded Ajakaye’s presentation for bringing to light the critical issue of preserving Nigerian languages in the digital age. The discussion sparked the importance of addressing the challenges faced by indigenous languages like Yoruba as technology continues to shape communication patterns.

For fourteen unforgettable days, the ancient town of Ifetedo in Osun State pulsed with rhythm, colour, and spiritual reverence as it hosted the 2025 edition of its iconic Egúngún Festival — a celebration that remains one of the purest expressions of Yoruba ancestral veneration and community identity.

The festival kicked off with pomp and spiritual symbolism on Saturday, July 27, drawing crowds from across Yorubaland and beyond. From the first drumbeat to the final swirling masquerade dance yesterday, Ifetedo Kingdom once again demonstrated why it holds a prestigious place in the cultural calendar of southwestern Nigeria.

Opening Ceremonies and Ancestral Awakening

The opening day was marked by rituals at the family shrines, where ancestral masks were consecrated and prayers offered for protection, prosperity, and peace. Indigenous priests, known as Alágba, invoked the spirits of the ancestors, calling them forth to bless the land and commune with the living. Sacred drumming filled the air as elders recounted oral histories and children watched wide-eyed, learning the traditions that have defined Ifetedo for generations.

The streets came alive with the rhythmic thunder of Bàtá, Gángan, and Ìyá-ìlù drums, heralding the arrival of the Egúngún masqueraders — towering, masked figures cloaked in multi-coloured fabrics, often embroidered with shimmering sequins and symbolic motifs. Each Egúngún represented a specific lineage, embodying the spirit of a departed ancestor returning to visit the living.

Days of Dance, Drama, and Display

As the festival unfolded, the town was transformed into a living museum of Yoruba heritage. Daily processions featured various Egúngún troupes, each more captivating than the last — some playful, others fierce, many majestic. Some danced in silence; others issued booming oracular warnings, poetic incantations, or blessings.

One of the most admired figures this year was Egúngún Aláré, renowned for its grace and spiritual intensity. Its appearance, accompanied by haunting chants and sudden acrobatic flourishes, drew gasps and reverent bows from the audience. Another crowd favourite was Egúngún Ajọsọ, known for engaging theatrics and satirical mimicry, playfully calling out members of the community in coded proverbs and folk humour.

In fifteen days, the ritual Ìgbájà will take place — the symbolic cleansing and final dismissal of the ancestral spirits. This rite is critical: it ensures the peaceful departure of the Egúngún and the sealing of blessings they bestowed. It is also an opportunity for the community to express gratitude and spiritual closure.

Many are already preparing. New clothes are being sewn. Drummers are rehearsing. The spirits may be out of sight, but they are not out of mind.

The 2025 Egúngún Festival in Ifetedo was more than just a cultural performance; it was a living, breathing affirmation of Yoruba spirituality, history, and collective memory. Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, has reimbursed pilgrims from the state who fell victim to a foreign currency scam in Saudi Arabia.

This was disclosed by the state Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board on Sunday.

A statement e-signed by the Executive Secretary of the board, Alhaji Abdulsalam Abdulkadir, confirmed that an investigation had commenced into “the recent incident involving some of our pilgrims who were reportedly defrauded of their Basic Travel Allowance (BTA).

“Every pilgrim was given their $500 BTA in five $100 bills in the public space and under the supervision of officials of the Directorate of State Security, who ensured that the currency was original.

“Each pilgrim signed for the collection of their BTA after counting it in the presence of pilgrims’ board officials and the DSS.”

The board, responding to viral videos from Saudi Arabia, said preliminary findings indicated the fraud likely occurred after arrival in Medina.

“Upon seeing the viral video in which some of our pilgrims said they had received five one-dollar bills instead of the five one-hundred-dollar notes, our preliminary findings suggest that these incidents likely occurred after the pilgrims had arrived in Medina, Saudi Arabia,” the board said.

“In several cases, the affected individuals—mostly elderly and not familiar with foreign currencies—had sought help from strangers to convert their funds into Saudi Riyals.

“These unscrupulous individuals apparently took advantage of their vulnerability by swapping $100 bills with $1 bills under the guise of assisting them with currency exchange,” it added.

The board announced the intervention of the governor to mitigate the impact of the scam on the pilgrims.

“In response to this unfortunate development, His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has graciously provided for each of the affected pilgrims to be given $500 to offset the losses they incurred.

“We ask Allaah to reward His Excellency’s swift and compassionate intervention,” the statement added.

The board also highlighted the governor’s earlier support visit to pilgrims in Mecca, during which he extended financial assistance to all pilgrims for their local expenses.

“Similarly, the governor had visited the Kwara pilgrims’ hotel in Mecca during which he extended financial support to all pilgrims to support their local expenses.

“The board and all pilgrims express our gratitude for this kind gesture,” the statement added.

In the wake of similar fraudulent incidents among pilgrims from other states, the board expressed support for the Central Bank of Nigeria’s proposed reform to disburse BTA through preloaded debit cards instead of physical cash.

“This will enhance transparency, reduce the risk of theft or fraud, and ensure that all pilgrims—especially the elderly—can manage their funds more securely,” the board stated.

The 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Bayero, has announced the cancellation of the Eid-el-Fitr Durbar celebration due to security concerns in the state.

Emir Bayero made this announcement while briefing newsmen at his Nasarawa Mini Palace in Kano on Wednesday night.

He said that the peaceful coexistence of the people takes precedence over the Durbar celebration.

Emir Bayero had initially planned to hold the Durbar celebration, which would have coincided with his fifth year anniversary on the throne.

He noted that respected Islamic clerics, elders, stakeholders, and his council members advised him to cancel the celebration to maintain peace.
