The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, was laid to rest on Monday at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, following his passing on Sunday at the age of 91.
The revered monarch, who held the throne for over six decades, was buried in a solemn ceremony conducted according to Ijebu traditional rites. His burial marked the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most influential and longest-reigning traditional rulers.
The private interment was attended by an array of dignitaries, including top government officials, traditional rulers, business leaders, and cultural icons.
Among those present were:
- Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State
- Former Governor Gbenga Daniel
- Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
- Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State
- Billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote
- Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate)
Also in attendance were members of the Ijebu royal family, high chiefs of the Ijebu Traditional Council, and prominent figures from across the Southwest and beyond.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was widely respected for his progressive leadership, commitment to Yoruba unity, and dedication to the modernization of the traditional institution.
His passing has been described as a monumental loss to Yorubaland and Nigeria at large, prompting tributes from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, traditional rulers, and citizens across the country.
A formal celebration of life and legacy is expected to be held in the coming days, as tributes continue to pour in for the late monarch, who is remembered as a symbol of dignity, wisdom, and royal distinction.
