Abuja, June 30, 2025 — Former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has strongly condemned the police blockade that prevented members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from accessing the national secretariat in Abuja on Monday.
The incident, which unfolded ahead of a scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, forced PDP leaders to relocate the gathering to the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in the Central Business District.
Addressing journalists shortly after the disruption, Chief George decried the development as an attack on internal democracy and a dangerous sign of authoritarianism.
“They said we will not hold our meetings in our office? What is going on? We must avoid that pit-line, the madness. What is it? Can’t we sit and talk? What is the essence of democracy? Nigerians are watching,” he said.
He further criticized the presence of heavily armed police officers at the party’s headquarters, suggesting it was a politically motivated attempt to silence dissent and undermine party processes.
“You came to our office, surrounded by police, because you want to have a meeting? You want to turn us into North Korea? Or turn this country into Russia? We will not allow it,” George stated emphatically.
As of the time of this report, there had been no official explanation from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the siege on the PDP secretariat. The incident has sparked outrage within opposition circles and raised concerns over the state of democratic freedoms in the country.
