The Bauchi State Government has renamed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in the state after late educationist, Malam Yusuf Muhammad (Y.M.) Baba.
The announcement was made on Saturday by the State Head of Service, Sani Umar, during a symposium in Bauchi organised in honour of the deceased.
Umar explained that the renaming of the facility to “Malam Y.M. Baba Orientation Camp” was part of efforts to immortalise Baba, whom he described as a lifelong advocate of education.
“By the grace of God, in his honour, the state is doing a lot in education. But first of all, I would like to make it clear that the name of Bauchi State NYSC orientation camp has been formally changed to Malam Y.M. Baba Orientation Camp,” he said.
The Head of Service also disclosed that the government was working to improve the quality of education in the state through the recruitment of more teachers in core subjects at both primary and secondary levels. He added that 10 day schools had recently been converted into boarding schools to enhance enrolment and retention.
At the symposium, convener Adamu Yashi described Baba as “a true servant of the people” whose life was defined by discipline, humility, honesty, and wisdom.
“Mallam Yusuf Muhammad Baba was not just a teacher or leader; he was a community builder. The best way to honour him is not merely by talking about him, but by living like him — disciplined, respectful, truthful, and committed to making society better,” Yashi said.
He highlighted Baba’s career trajectory, which included roles as a teacher, principal, provost, registrar, permanent secretary, Secretary to the State Government, district head, and mentor to many.
Baba, who passed away in 2024, was the eldest brother of Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and served as his guardian after the death of their father.
