The Dangote Refinery has reduced its gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, by N50 per litre, bringing the price down from N1,175 to N1,125 per litre nationwide.

The latest adjustment was confirmed on Thursday by the spokesperson of the Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, who stated that the refinery had implemented the reduction as part of ongoing price reviews in response to market developments.

According to him, the refinery’s petrol gantry price has now been lowered by N50 per litre, further easing wholesale fuel costs across the country.

In addition to the reduction in gantry prices, the refinery also reviewed its coastal supply price downward. The coastal petrol supply price fell from N1,495,215 per metric tonne to N1,428,165 per metric tonne.

The development comes amid a significant decline in global crude oil prices, which have dropped to between $69 and $73 per barrel, returning to levels recorded before the escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

The latest cut follows an earlier reduction announced by the refinery on June 16, when the gantry price of petrol was lowered by N75 per litre. That adjustment subsequently triggered reductions in retail pump prices across various parts of the country.

With the new reduction, the refinery has cut its petrol price by a cumulative N125 per litre within two weeks as international oil prices continue to soften.

Despite the downward adjustments, retail petrol prices in Abuja and surrounding areas currently range between N1,241 and N1,305 per litre, depending on the marketer and location.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians have continued to call for further reductions in pump prices, arguing that fuel should return to levels of between N800 and N900 per litre, which prevailed before the spike in global energy prices linked to geopolitical tensions earlier in the year.

Industry observers say the impact of the latest reduction on retail prices will depend on market forces, distribution costs, and the speed at which marketers adjust their pricing structures in response to the lower refinery rates.

The Nigerian Senate has passed a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, marking a major step toward restructuring the country’s security framework and addressing persistent security challenges nationwide.

The proposed legislation, which scaled third reading during plenary on Wednesday, seeks to empower individual states to establish and manage their own police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force.

Lawmakers backing the bill said the move is aimed at strengthening security responses to growing threats such as banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and communal conflicts across various parts of the country.

Supporters of the proposal argued that decentralised policing would improve intelligence gathering at the grassroots level, enhance rapid response to local security threats, and promote community-based law enforcement tailored to the unique needs of each state.

They further maintained that the establishment of state police would enable governors and state governments to assume greater responsibility for maintaining security within their jurisdictions.

However, the proposal has continued to generate debate among stakeholders, with some expressing concerns that state-controlled police forces could be misused by political leaders to intimidate opponents, suppress dissent, or influence electoral processes.

The state police bill forms part of a broader package of constitutional amendment proposals currently being considered by the National Assembly as part of efforts to reform governance and strengthen institutions.

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned ruling on the bail applications filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and his co-defendant, Jimi Lawal, to July 1, 2026.

The ruling was deferred following proceedings on Wednesday in a corruption case instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

El-Rufai appeared before two separate courts in Kaduna over allegations bordering on abuse of office, financial misconduct, and money laundering.

At the Federal High Court, the former governor, Lawal, and several companies were arraigned on an amended 11-count charge filed by the ICPC. The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Following arguments by counsel on their bail applications, Justice Hauwa’u Buhari adjourned the matter until July 1 for ruling on the applications.

In a related development, El-Rufai also appeared before the Kaduna State High Court in a separate case brought by the anti-corruption agency.

The matter, presided over by Justice Darius Khobo, was adjourned to June 29, 2026, for further hearing.

The former governor and the other defendants have denied all allegations levelled against them and entered not-guilty pleas to the charges.

The Senate on Wednesday welcomed four new lawmakers into the Red Chamber following their victories in the recent by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The new senators, representing Rivers South East, Nasarawa North, Enugu North and Ondo South Senatorial Districts, were formally sworn in during plenary by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The lawmakers are Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ikeje Asogwu of the APC, and Dayo Faduyile of the APC.

The swearing-in ceremony filled vacancies that emerged following the deaths of former senators Barinada Mpigi, Godiya Akwaashiki and Okechukwu Ezea. The Ondo South seat became vacant after the appointment of former Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

A member of the House of Representatives and Director-General of the Osun State Governorship Campaign Council, Oluwole Oke, has denied allegations linking him and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the killing of an Accord Party member, Ajayi Aderogba, popularly known as Rogba.

Aderogba was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, during preparations for a political rally in support of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s second-term bid.

The allegations were made by the spokesperson for the Adeleke Campaign Organisation, Pelumi Olajengbesi, who accused Oke of being behind the attack that led to Aderogba’s death. Olajengbesi claimed that the federal lawmaker had made efforts to frustrate the planned political event in the community prior to the incident.

Responding to the allegations, Oke, through a statement issued by his media aide, Tunde Omolebi-Sunday, described the claims as false, misleading and unfounded.

The lawmaker expressed shock and sadness over the killing, extending condolences to the family of the deceased, his associates and residents of Esa-Oke.

He faulted attempts to link him and the APC to the incident without the outcome of investigations by security agencies, stressing that such accusations were premature and irresponsible.

According to the statement, neither Oke nor the APC had any connection with the death of Aderogba, adding that any attempt to implicate them without credible evidence should be rejected.

Oke called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The statement further noted that preliminary accounts from members of the community suggested that the incident may have resulted from clashes involving rival groups, with indications of possible reprisal attacks. However, it emphasised that only a comprehensive investigation could establish the true facts of the case.

The federal lawmaker also urged political stakeholders and residents to remain calm, avoid inflammatory statements and allow security agencies to carry out their duties professionally.

He warned against politicising a matter involving loss of life, stressing that issues of such gravity should not be reduced to political rhetoric.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned proceedings in the alleged cybercrime case involving activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, until June 30, 2026, for a ruling on his application seeking the restoration of his bail.

Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the date after Sowore’s counsel moved an application asking the court to set aside the revocation of his bail and reinstate the bail conditions previously granted to him.

During the proceedings, the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the defendant had failed to present sufficient and truthful facts that would warrant the court’s discretion in granting the relief sought.

Counsel to Sowore also made an oral application requesting that the defendant be released into the custody of his legal team, assuring the court that they would produce him whenever required, including on the date fixed for the ruling.

The prosecution, however, opposed the request, maintaining its objection to any interim release pending the court’s decision on the substantive application.

After listening to submissions from both parties, Justice Umar declined to make an immediate ruling and directed all parties to return to court on June 30, when the court will deliver its decision on the applications before it.

The case is one of several ongoing legal proceedings involving Sowore, with the court’s forthcoming ruling expected to determine whether his bail will be restored pending the continuation of the trial.

Traffic was brought to a standstill on Wednesday along the Lagos-Ore-Benin Expressway after truck drivers blocked the Oniparaga axis of the highway in protest against alleged extortion by police officers in Ondo State.

The action resulted in heavy gridlock, leaving hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded for several hours on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors. The disruption caused significant delays for commuters and commercial transport operators travelling along the route.

Several affected travellers appealed to relevant authorities to intervene promptly and resolve the impasse in order to restore normal traffic flow and reduce the hardship experienced by road users trapped in the congestion.

However, the Ondo State Police Command has dismissed claims that the protest was triggered by police extortion.

In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, described reports circulating on social media as false and misleading.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the traffic disruption stemmed from the actions of a tanker driver who allegedly blocked the highway following a disagreement with officers performing lawful duties.

The command maintained that the incident was unrelated to allegations of extortion and insisted that it was not a coordinated protest against police activities.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, has directed the deployment of additional personnel to the affected area to restore order, manage traffic and ensure the safety of commuters and other road users.

The police urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports regarding the incident and await official information from the command.

Authorities are continuing efforts to ease the congestion and restore normal movement along the highway.
