The Anambra State Government has arrested members of its security outfit who were caught on video assaulting a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor.
The viral footage, which surfaced on Tuesday, showed armed operatives storming a corps members’ lodge, accusing occupants of being internet fraudsters despite their valid identification. The operatives were seen beating Elobor, tearing her clothes in the process, and ignoring her cries for help — an incident that has since sparked outrage across social media.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, condemned the attack as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He confirmed that those involved had been identified, arrested, and placed in detention pending investigation.
According to Emeakayi, the assault occurred during Operation Udo Gatchi—a joint security exercise involving the police, army, DSS, civil defence, and Agbunechemba, the state security outfit. He said operatives were chasing suspected cultists on motorcycles when they entered the compound housing corps members.
“While they were acting within the law, their conduct in that instance was unacceptable,” he said. “Immediately the incident happened, we arrested the operatives involved, placed them in detention, and commenced preliminary investigations.”
Emeakayi revealed that the victim and NYSC officials were invited to his office, where their statements were taken. He added that disciplinary measures are being pursued and prosecution would follow if necessary.
He also clarified that Agbunechemba is Anambra’s statutory security outfit created by law, while Operation Udo Gatchi is a broader joint task force.
Reassuring residents, Emeakayi said Governor Soludo’s administration would not tolerate any abuse of power against citizens, particularly corps members serving in the state.
