Abuja, July 11, 2025 — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Governor Monday Okpebholo on his victory at the Supreme Court, describing the ruling as a reaffirmation of democracy and the will of the Edo people.
In a statement personally signed and issued from Abuja on Friday, Akpabio commended the apex court’s decision, which upheld Okpebholo’s election as the duly elected governor of Edo State following the September 2024 gubernatorial polls.
“The Supreme Court has affirmed the will and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the people of Edo State,” Akpabio said. “It shows that the election was transparent, free, and fair.”
The Senate President noted that the judgment, which dismissed the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, confirmed that elections are determined by the people’s votes and not in courtrooms.
He described Okpebholo as a “grassroots leader” whose popularity had been validated by both the electorate and the judiciary, adding that the victory reflects the growing strength of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State.
“This milestone affirms Okpebholo’s mandate and paves the way for him to continue delivering exceptional service to the good people of Edo,” Akpabio added. “He has done well in the past seven months, and I believe he will excel throughout his four-year tenure.”
Offering his personal felicitations, the Senate President said, “On behalf of my family, constituents, and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to Governor Okpebholo and the people of Edo on this landmark Supreme Court victory.”
