The Edo State Parole Board has reviewed 13 applications for parole from inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Benin, as part of efforts to promote rehabilitation and reintegration of reformed offenders.
Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Aminu Suleman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Benin. He said five of the inmates had been shortlisted for direct interviews to determine their eligibility for early release.
The hearing, chaired by retired Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga, was concluded this week after an initial session held earlier. According to Suleman, the review process focused on inmates’ good behaviour, productivity in custody, evidence of rehabilitation, and concrete reintegration plans.
“This process is about giving a second chance while ensuring public safety. Our responsibility is to balance justice with rehabilitation in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019,” Justice Edodo-Eruaga was quoted as saying.
The parole board is expected to forward its recommendations to the Controller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, for final approval.
Suleman noted that parole benefits not just the inmates but also society at large, as it supports community safety and national development.
Other members of the board included representatives from the NCoS, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, the Nigerian Psychological Association, the Association of Medical Social Workers, and the Edo Civil Society Organisation (EdoCSO).
